Stephens Creek

Stephens Creek Reservoir

Stephens Creek Reservoir plays a significant role in the Broken Hill region’s water supply, providing backup for the Essential Water network, contributing to the reliable supply for the area.

The dam is located approximately 15 kilometres north east of Broken Hill on the Barrier Highway (Highway 32).

The Broken Hill Water Supply Company constructed the dam between 1891-1892 and it was opened by Sir Henry Parkes, former Premier of New South Wales in 1892. It was the third dam constructed for water supply purposes in New South Wales, and served as Broken Hill’s only water supply until 1914.

The historic droughts of 1903, 1907 and 1909 left the Reservoir critically low, influencing community attitudes towards the importance of water security. In 1909, the original spillways were raised three feet to increase its storage capacity.

Today, the area offers visitors a peaceful outback setting ideal for short walks, picnics and quiet sightseeing with open views, picnic tables, a children's playground and barbecue facilities.
